Michiko Ogawa is clarinetist born and raised in Tokyo. Michiko performs not only classical repertoires but also contemporary repertoires and experimental music, including free improvisation.
As a classical clarinte player, Michiko has worked as a member of the Tokyo Music Arts organization since 2009 mainly as a soloist and chamber musician. She also has played as a guest with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, working with Helmut Lachenmann to realize several of his orchestral works.
As a comtemporary clarinet player or improviser, she has appered at Tokyo Experimental Festival(2013), Darmstadt summer music festival(2014,2016), "Supersense" in Melbourne(2015), Springfest at the University of California San Diego(2015), Monday Evening Concert(Los Angels,2016),WasteLAnd(Los Angels,2016), Inland(Melbourne,2015,2016), BIFEM(Bendigo, Austlaria 2016,2017) among others. She has worked with composers including Toshi Ichiyanagi , Helmut Lachenmann, Richard Barret and Chikako Morishita, among others and with performers including Charles Curtis, Anthony Burr, Erik Carlson, Greg Stuart, Taku Sugimoto, Vicki Ray, Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick, Shalini Vijayan and Samuel Dunscombe. Michiko also have done many Japan/Australia/US and world premiers of works by Alvin Lucier, Horatiu Radulescu, Olga Neuwirth ,Chaya Czernowin, Jakob Ullman, Hiroyuki Yamamoto,Yoshifumi Tanaka, Jennifer Walshe, Catharine Lamb, Taku Sugimoto, Juerg Frey, Elise Roy and Chikako Morishita. x. Michiko is an avid performer, having played with several other chamber ensembles (Palimpsest, red fish blue fish, Bang on a Can, Golden Fur, Renga, Wildup,etc).
Recently, Michiko has been collaborating with the other genre of artists(Brianna Rigg, Parkeology Manuel Lima ) so far as sound artist, performer(Clarinet, Sho, Tape recorder and electronics) and composer.
She is awarded her bachelors degree at Toho Gakuen University, under prof. Yoshiaki Suzuki, her masters degree at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, under Prof.Jorg Widmann. Michiko was awarded second place in the Carl-Seemann Preis(2007), and performed as a representative of the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg at the 55th German Music University Competition in the same year. Currently, Michiko is a advanced candidate in the program of Doctor of Music Performance (DMA) at the University of California (San Diego), under Prof. Anthony Burr. She also teaches clarinet as an Assistant-in at the University of California (San Diego) .
